Ford never had much luck in the Can-Am. Despite the consummate skill of Mario Andretti, his Honker was not up to speed at Bridgehampton in 1967. After Paul Newman's name was painted on the nose, Mario remarked acidly that he'd rather paint his name on the nose and have Paul drive the beast. Thanks to Petelyons.com for the photo.

Douglas Mesney Gallery - '66 '67 '68

Douglas Mesney was perhaps the most creative racing photographer working in the 1960s and Bridgehampton fired his imagination.

 

Says Mesney, who was on assignment for Car and Driver: "I had so much competition for the "normal" shots, that I went out to look for "other perspectives!"
