1970's ...

A hurricane and financial mismanagement spelled the end of big-time racing in 1970, and developers began circling, lured by Bridgehampton’s stunning views of Peconic Bay. But race fans prevailed and thousands of club racers got the thrill of their lives throughout the decade.

Already by the early 1970's, the "experts" were sounding the death knell for Bridgehampton, as this 1971 magzine suggests. But they underestimated how many people were willing to fight hard to "Save the Bridge". Racing continued for another 26 glorious years!
