October 2009: Customers at the Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen saw seismic waves ripple through their coffee when Jan Nelson fired up his Shelby Notchback Trans-Am Mustang at Bridgehampton Racing Heritage Group’s annual ‘I Survived The Bridge’ celebration. The event brought together drivers and cars that had contested some of the most notable races held at the Bridgehampton Race Circuit. Despite monsoon-like conditions, about 100 people showed up to relive history, watch movies, comb through unique exhibits and share stories of legend and foolishness. Three legendary Porsche Carrera 6’s (known as Batmobiles in their day) contested the inaugural Can-Am race at Bridgehampton on September 18, 1966. Two of those drivers, Joe Buzetta and Herb Wetson (pictured here), were reunited in Bridgehampton this October to pay tribute to The Bridge and meet other racers. “We had a wonderful time,” said Herb, who regaled the crowd with stories of the parties at Bridgehampton and Sebring.
